About our Commitment to Active Travel

Coomera Springs State School has been awarded official active travel school status by the City of Gold

Coast. This means we are committed to working with families and our broader school community to

support our children in taking active forms of travel to and from school—such as walking, riding a

bike or scooter, catching the bus or carpooling.

Good things happen when school communities active travel! Empowered children travel safely to

and from school, help the environment, feel part of a community and have fun.

Why We Love Active School Travel

Our Active School Travel (AST) program encourages families and staff who are able, to leave their cars at home and travel actively to school by walking, wheeling, buses or carpooling! As an active travel school community, we enjoy:

  • Healthier and more active students and parents.
  • Safer school zones and reduced traffic around schools.
  • Increased concentration in students while learning life-long skills.
  • A connected community and environment to make friends.
  • Helping the environment!

How to be an Active Travel Family

You can become an active travel family by changing the way you move to and from school.

The following modes count as active school travel:

Walking

Leave the car at home and walk to school. If you live too far away,

drive part of the way and walk the rest. We call that 'park and stride'.

Wheeling

Riding a bike with your children helps them get to
school quickly, be active and develop
lifelong riding skills. It's fun and fast to scooter or
skateboard to school. Just like when riding a bike,
stick to the footpath and wear a helmet.

Carpooling

If you have to drive, try carpooling with
another family to help reduce the
number of cars at the school gate.

Catching Public Transport

Travelling on public transport can give older
children a sense of independence and free
parents from daily school trips.

Join us on Fun Fit Friday!

You don't have to change the way you travel every day of the week – just one day a week can make

a big difference. As an AST school, we have nominated Friday as our weekly active travel day! We'd love to see as many families in our school community picking active travel as the way to go on this day.

  • Students walk, park and stride, scoot, ride, carpool or catch public transport to school (usually with their parents). Our fantastic student leaders are stationed at the top of the stairs near OSHC, ready to stamp AST bag tags.
  • Teachers survey their students in the classrooms and record those actively travelling each Friday. The class with the highest percentage wins a for display in their classroom for the following week.
  • Other prizes/rewards to be announced soon!

Talk to Your Children

Have conversations with your children about road safety, the active travel events being held at school, and the skills they are learning by travelling actively to school.

Road Safety

Practicing safety while driving in school zones

School zones can be busy places, especially during the start and end of the school day—making them

risky environments for both motorists and pedestrians. School zones are frequented by some of the most vulnerable members of the community including children and their families. Children do not always understand the dangers of roads and vehicles, so it is important for motorists to follow road safety rules and model correct road safety behaviour to protect children and teach them how to behave. Pick-up and drop-off are the busiest times outside our school. When parking on school grounds or the roads and streets around school, and when moving through the drop-off and pick-up zone, take extra care. Always obey signed parking rules to provide a safer environment for children. Please see the links below for more information.

We all need to do our part to keep our children safe!
